Roberts, Jr., today announced the retirement of Judge Roslynn R. Mauskopf as the Director of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, to become effective in early 2024. A new Director will be selected and publicly announced at a future date. The Director of the Administrative Office is the chief administrative officer of the federal courts. The Director serves under the direction of the Judicial Conference of the United States, the principal policy-making body for the federal court system. The Chief Justice is the presiding officer of the Conference, which is composed of the chief judges of the 13 courts of appeals, a district judge from each of the 12 geographic circuits, and the chief judge of the Court of International Trade. The Chief Justice selects the Director. In announcing Judge Mauskopf’s retirement, the Chief Justice said, “Judge Roz Mauskopf has provided invaluable service to the Judiciary in her nearly three year tenure as Director. Since assuming that role in February 2021, she has brought her superb judgment to bear in addressing a broad range of issues. Among her many accomplishments, she has guided our branch through the pandemic, navigated serious budgetary challenges, implemented workplace conduct and ethics reforms, strengthened the Judiciary’s cybersecurity defenses, modernized its technology infrastructure, improved the oversight of the Judicial Branch’s operations, and served as a steady hand in her role as Secretary of the Judicial Conference. Roz’s service as AO Director caps more than four decades of public service, including as Inspector General of the State of New York, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, District Judge, and Chief Judge. I appreciate her many contributions to the legal system and the judicial branch. On behalf of the Judiciary, I thank Roz for her leadership and wish her all the best as she returns to New York to begin a new phase of her career.” Judge Mauskopf reflected on her service, saying, “I am deeply grateful to Chief Justice John Roberts for the privilege of serving as Director of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. It has been a singular honor to work for him, and the branch is fortunate to have his wise and steady leadership. As Director, I have been inspired by the outstanding professionals at the AO who, with unparalleled expertise, have so ably supported the operations of our courts. To my Eastern District of New York ‘court family’, I extend my abiding affection and profound respect.
